Students for Life
of America

Grading details

c+

Students for Life of America is a pro-life collegiate organization that sets up pro-life collegiate groups on college campuses. Their state coordinator turn over rate (of many coordinators in the past not staying on for more than 1-2 years) is not why we are giving them a C+ grade. Kristin Hawkins (the President) does a good job in achieving her goal of setting up collegiate pro-life groups on college campuses. We are giving the C+ plus rating due to hiring a young black woman as the National Minorities Coordinator in addition to hiring her to be a state coordinator for the two states she was assigned to as well. She launched their 1st pro-life group on an HBCU campus  (Historical Black Campus & University). Unfortunately at the time, SFLA would not put the extra resources needed into the unique community/relationship building requirements of what it takes to launch and maintain an HBCU pro-life group, which is different than launching a group on a non-HBCU campus. Extra time and resources beyond the normal state coordinator duties is needed to mentor HBCU students (who normally have no foundation in the pro-life movement) to help them understand the pro-life movement, and their place in it, and how to be pro-active in it, starting with their lifestyles. It is important to do this in a way that is sensitive to the black community culture. After this particular National Minorities Coordinator left (around the two year mark) SFLA allowed the HBCU pro-life group to die out. SFLA does their work well on non HBCU college campuses.
